Before school starts in the autumn, each family comes for an orientation class picnic. Each child is guided through the forest, making eight offerings along the way. The eight offerings align with traditional offering substances found on altars throughout the Himalayas—drinking water, washing water, flower, incense, candles, perfume (we used bug spray!), food, and music. Students meet their teacher on the path and set an aspiration for the year. We also set a boundary around the learning space using flower petals and song.
