    Students will know...

A Buddhist lineage is a succession of teachers and students that transmits the Buddhist teachings, theoretically tracing back to the Buddha himself. Lineage plays a crucial role in maintaining the authenticity of dharma over time. There are various types of lineage: textual, oral (including songs), ritual, and, within the Vajrayana, there is also a tradition of lineage being received through visions or mind-to-mind transmission. In contemporary times, new methods of communicating the dharma have emerged, most notably through digital communications.

The lineage traditions or schools of Buddhism arose and developed in response to specific needs and circumstances. The three main schools are Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, and within those, there are hundreds of other specific lineages. Some lineages claim to have an uninterrupted chain of transmission from teacher to student and believe that this is the best method, rather than relying on the texts themselves, which often require interpretation to avoid misunderstandings and gain the full meaning.

Note: Students should know the life stories of relevant lineage holders and how they adapted their teachings to fit the challenges and circumstances of their time. Teachers are encouraged to explore at least one lineage outside of their most immediate surroundings with their students. Links to other lineage traditions, indigenous populations, and neighboring cultures can also be made.
