Discerning Authentic Dharma
Recognizing reliable sources of dharma
Content Knowledge
Students will know...Examining Buddhism throughout history, we observe that methods evolve based on culture and context, yet the core teachings remain unchanged, underscoring the universal applicability and timeless relevance of the dharma. These adaptations have enriched the practice of Buddhism, allowing it to address the unique needs and circumstances of diverse societies.
The Buddhist source texts, such as the sutras, the Pali Canon, and the Dhammapada, play a crucial role in preserving authentic dharma. These texts not only provide a direct connection to the Buddha’s teachings but also allow practitioners to assess teachings and practices against the core principles of Buddhism. They serve as a foundation for understanding the nature of suffering, the path to its cessation, and the cultivation of wisdom, ethical conduct, and mental discipline.
By becoming knowledgeable about the fundamentals of Buddhism (such as the three marks, the four noble truths, and the eightfold path), we can better determine whether a teaching is authentic dharma.
If determining the source is not possible, consider checking whether it contradicts any of the essential qualities of the Buddhist view as set forth in the fundamental teachings. This learning goal aligns well with the academic skill of using critical thinking, checking sources, and asking questions before accepting something as true.
Understanding
Students will understand...Methods of communicating the dharma vary by culture and context, yet the core teachings remain consistent. This variation allows for corruption and misappropriation. Critical thinking, study, and practice enable us to discern whether a teaching is an authentic dharma teaching or not.
Experience
Students find relevance and meaning and develop intrinsic motivation to act when they...Consider what ideas sound most agreeable to you, or to your family and friends. Reflect on why people might generally agree or disagree with an idea they hear. If they do actually think about it more deeply, what criteria might people generally use to determine whether something is accurate?
