Buddhist Debate
Debate as a practice of logic
Content Knowledge
Students will know...Debate is a powerful and dynamic method for cultivating wisdom by sharpening our reasoning skills, deepening our insight into reality, and learning to respectfully challenge and defend ideas.
Different forms of debate are used across various traditions, such as analytical reasoning, syllogisms, and structured exchanges between challengers and defenders. Specific traditions of debate are commonly used in the training of monks and nuns in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. More generally, debate is an important skill taught in schools around the world, which helps one learn to perceive disagreement as an opportunity to practice one’s logic rather than as a personal attack.
Through this practice, we develop clarity, mental agility, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives. The aim is not to accept every statement blindly, but to examine the consequences of our own reasoning. This includes identifying contradictions in an opponent’s logic, employing their own inferential reasoning, applying reductio ad absurdum, and exposing circular arguments where a claim is used to substantiate itself.
Debate is akin to sharpening a sword. Through familiarization, it transforms into a tool for understanding reality. Debate helps us establish logical reasoning that we can then reflect upon. Moreover, it assists us in eliminating incorrect views, the root of all mental afflictions and suffering, and benefits both ourselves and others by addressing misconceptions.
