About

Drepung Gomang School is administered by Dre-Gomang Buddhist cultural Association (DGBCA) and currently hosts more than 200 monks. Young monks begin their studies around the age of six. They attend 8 years of classes in the standard subjects of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history. In addition, they begin preliminary studies of scripture and philosophy as soon as they learn to read and write. Every year the school also organizes summer camps for the children during the summer vacation. There they are taught Tibetan calligraphy, grammar, literature, history and basic religious studies.

In addition to the Collected Topics (Parchen), the school’s curriculum covers the five major topics which are: commentaries of logic; perfection of wisdom; avoidance of extremes/middle way; canons of monastic discipline; treasure house of knowledge. These five themes are studied over the course of sixteen years, after which a monk can pursue further studies. Upon successfully passing this exam, the monk is awarded the degree of Geshe. The Geshe then undertakes one year mandatory course at one of two tantric colleges (Gyumed Tantric college or Gyotoe Tantric College).
