Benchen Primary School is located within the Benchen Monastery which currently accommodates about 270 monks. The Primary School was opened in 2002 in order to also provide the pupils with state-approved education. The Monastery provides food, clothing and accommodation. The children also receive a monastic education and training, as it was traditionally done in Tibet. Important aspects of this education are reading and writing in Tibetan and Nepali languages, reciting of chants by heart, playing instruments, monastic dancing and creating Mandalas. During their training monks are also instructed in Buddhist philosophy and English.
