Right Effort
Striving to develop the skillful means to awaken
Content Knowledge
Students will know...Right effort is the sixth factor of the noble eightfold path, falling under the concentration category. Right effort is an important part of the Buddhist path, helping us bring mindfulness and focus into our daily lives. The Buddha taught that we should abandon unwholesome factors on the path and develop what is skillful. Specifically, right effort works to prevent and eliminate the five hindrances (see LG 400)—grasping/desire, aversion/ill will, restlessness/worry, sloth/torpor, and doubt—which are mental obstacles that impede spiritual progress and cloud clear thinking.
Right effort often encompasses the other aspects of the eightfold path. For example, right effort—guided by the right view and right mindfulness—helps us let go of harmful habits and thoughts while encouraging positive and beneficial ones. Through this process, we gradually replace negative patterns with those that align with the path of wisdom and compassion. The five hindrances—grasping/desire, aversion/ill will, restlessness/worry, sloth/torpor, and doubt—are unwholesome factors that impede the practice of right effort.
Right effort might also be referred to as diligence, which involves preventing harmful states that have yet to arise, eliminating harmful states that have already emerged, and enhancing wholesome states. Specifically, it emphasizes enthusiasm for cultivating virtuous mental states and actions.
Right effort is about making thoughtful and compassionate choices that lead to awakening. By being mindful of our thoughts and actions, we can gently guide ourselves toward more positive and caring states of mind.
Understanding
Students will understand...Practicing right effort often starts in meditation, observing the mind, and noticing our thought patterns. This practice doesn’t remain confined to the meditation cushion—it influences how we act and respond in our everyday lives. As we continue, right effort becomes a natural part of how we navigate challenges and cultivate a more joyful and compassionate life.
Experience
Students find relevance and meaning and develop intrinsic motivation to act when they...Life is full of choices, and we all put effort into making our lives. Yet, at times, no matter how hard we try, happiness still feels out of reach. Reflect on how the decisions we make every day can be more fulfilling when examined through the perspective of right effort.
