    Students will know...

In essence, there are various types of stories or tales that serve different functions. Legends are narratives based on historical events or heroes, though they tend to be exaggerated over time. Myths, on the other hand, account for the origins of the world, nature, and humanity, frequently involving gods and supernatural entities. Both myths and stories act as foundational narratives in religious settings, functioning as compelling means to explain origins, share core values, and reinforce beliefs. They create a common understanding of the world and humanity’s role in it, nurturing a sense of identity and community among followers. Such narratives provide guidance, meaning, and emotional support, often forming the basis for religious rituals and practices while helping to preserve traditions across generations.

Buddhist tales and parables contain core messages that apply to daily life across cultures and times. Distinct cultural contexts and communication methods can be explored. Essential stories include the life of the Buddha and the Jataka Tales.

Note: We recommend introducing Buddhist stories from a variety of traditions and cultures.

Stories, even fictional ones, can convey timeless truths and aid in our understanding of life. Buddhist stories provide a means of transmitting the wisdom of these timeless truths. Wisdom can be directly communicated or can arrive indirectly through stories, symbols, and step-by-step pathways. The stories we immerse ourselves in shape our lives, so we should be mindful of what we consume and seek out narratives that inspire us to exercise our will for the greater good.
