Diligence and Optimism

Applying optimism and diligence when working with others

"Optimism is different from ordinary hope, which is based in desire, wanting an outcome that could be different from what will actually happen. Not getting what we hoped for is usually experienced as some kind of misfortune. Someone who is hopeful in this way has an expectation that always hovers in the background, the shadow of fear that one’s wishes will not be fulfilled. This ordinary hope is a subtle expression of fear and a form of suffering." —Joan Halifax

Maintaining a positive attitude can help people overcome challenges and notice opportunities to grow, learn, and benefit others. In Buddhism, diligence is described as “enthusiasm for virtue.” Optimism, in this context, is infused with the aspiration to do no harm and bring benefit. It focuses on the perceived positive qualities of a situation and tends to be confident that the outcome will be favorable; whereas pessimism is a tendency to see the worst aspects of a situation and believe that the worst outcome is most likely.

While the basic message of Buddhism—that all beings have the capacity to awaken—can be considered a positive outlook, Buddhism aims beyond the extremes of optimism and pessimism, which are both habitual ways of interpreting situations.

Buddhist perspective is based on the belief in human potential and the ability to overcome confusion. Buddhists believe that complete enlightenment is possible, a view that inspires wholesome behavior as a means to create a better world with less suffering for all. This perspective is informed by logic, rather than naivety or hopefulness.

The more we find joy in what we do, the easier it is to be diligent and optimistic. Progress is possible. It can be satisfying and worthwhile to undertake tasks that seem challenging. Training our minds not to always look for the easy way out can help create a community where demonstrating an optimistic, diligent attitude is admired.
