Namgyal Tantric College, which is more commonly known as Namgyal Monastery, is the personal monastery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It has been working for young Tibetan monks in the hope of ensuring the survival of the unique Tibetan Traditional Buddhist studies and practices. The monastery was founded by His Holiness the second Dalai Lama, Gedun Gyatso (1440-1480) to assist him in carrying out his religious activities and to serve humanity. At present, the monastery has nearly two hundred monks and of these the younger monks are engaged in the study of the major texts of Buddhist Sutra and Tantra while at the same time pursuing modern studies. The monastery has become second home for these young monks where they receive free accommodation and food as well as traditional and modern education.

The curriculum of Namgyal Monastery historically is very heavily focused on tantric rituals. In 1959, after coming into exile, the study of Buddhist Philosophy, including debate, has been incorporated into the curriculum. The monks at Namgyal Monastery undergo a rigorous study and training in Buddhist philosophy and practice over a period of thirteen years, culminating in their degree of Rabjampa (roughly “Master”) in Sutra and Tantra. The curriculum is focused on philosophy and rituals, including memorization of Buddhist prayers and tantric texts for practice and visualization. The project of Namgyal Monastery School, was initiated by Namgyal Monastery’s 7th Abbot, Kyapjre Thamthok Rinpoche in 2013, in order to fulfill one of the long visions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, to provide both contemporary and traditional education to young monks. The project was graciously passed by His Holiness with his blessings and actual building construction of the school was begun in 2014. In the currently compelted school building, there is one prayer or memorizing hall, five Buddhist philosophy classrooms, one library, one computer classroom, one office, one staffroom, eight classrooms for general classes, six dormitories, two guest rooms, one store room and twelve staff quarters. The subjects studied are Buddhist Philosophy, Philosophical Debate, Science, Maths, Memorising,Tibetan and English language and literature. All monks also undergo a rigorous study and training in Buddhist philosophy and practice. ← Back to Monastic Directory
