India Celebration and MWS Open House
April 28, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
The Middle Way School Open House and India Celebration. We will start with a short Saraswati offering with Shubhraji. Then Woodstock’s woman of the North Woods, Catherine Sklarsky, will lead block printing with the children. We’ll wrap up the day with storytelling by Kristin Lhatso. There will be ample time to mingle and ask questions and enjoy chai and a little taste of biriyani by Rhinebeck’s Cinnamon Indian Cuisine.
Children will be invited to make colorful prints using hand-carved blocks sent by our friends at Kurma in Dehradun, India. We’ll have fabric to print on or bring your own t-shirts, canvas bags, or other material you’d like to adorn. Creativity has no boundaries so wear clothes that can be splashed with paint.
About the People
Local vedic philosopher Shubhraji established the Namah Saraswati Project in 2013 to create education opportunities for underprivileged children and adults. She will invoke the blessing of Saraswati with a short ritual chant. Children can participate in the ceremony by offering flowers, lamps, and incense.
Catherine Sklarsky founded In the North Woods Learning Center in 1990 as a community environmental education organization for children and adults. Her groups meet year-round throughout the woodlands, meadows, hollows, rivers, and streams of the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. Her nature-based programs include hiking, canoeing, relationship skills, plant and animal wisdom and lore, as well as opportunities for field journaling, creative outdoor play and seasonal ceremony and celebrations.
The Middle Way School keeps classrooms clean and uplifted by encouraging a shoeless environment. Slippered soles welcome.
